The Secret Sauce for Moving Better, Living Brighter, and Feeling Fully Alive: FAMSSS

As I’ve incorporated NIA (holistic movement, see NiaNow.com for more info) into my life this past year, I’ve been able to add a whole new dimension of transformation to my hypnosis practice; the relationship between mind, body, emotions, and spirit. If you've ever taken a NIA class or holistic movement program (and you might be soon, as I’m preparing to teach!), you may have heard of FAMSSS. It's an acronym that stands for:

  • Flexibility

  • Agility

  • Mobility

  • Strength

  • Stability

  • Stillness

Originally created to guide intentional physical movement, FAMSSS is more than just an exercise tool. It’s a lifestyle philosophy. When applied to your day-to-day life, these six elements can help you become more present, more embodied, and more empowered—not just in the studio, but in your relationships, your decision-making, and your mindset.

Let’s break it down.

1. Flexibility – Bend, Don’t Break

In Exercise:

Flexibility is the ability of your muscles and joints to move through a full range of motion. It’s what helps you stretch without strain, expand without injury, and feel fluid in your movement.

In Life:

Flexibility is your willingness to adapt. To change your mind. To open your heart. It’s your ability to respond rather than resist. The more flexible your thinking, the less likely you are to snap under pressure.

Real-Life Practice:

Change your schedule without losing your sh*t.

Let go of being “right” in a conversation.

Try a new way of doing something—even if it’s uncomfortable at first.

💡 Mantra: "I bend so I don’t break."

2. Agility – Pivot with Power

In Exercise:

Agility means quick, efficient transitions—dodging, weaving, shifting directions with speed and grace.

In Life:

Agility is your capacity to pivot when life throws you the unexpected. It’s bouncing back after failure. It’s shifting your energy when things don’t go as planned. Agility means you’re not stuck in the story of “this wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Real-Life Practice:

Catch yourself spiraling in negative thoughts, and pivot to gratitude or curiosity.

Adjust your plans when a challenge arises—without losing momentum.

Be mentally nimble in conversations or problem-solving.

💡 Mantra: "I shift with speed and grace."

3. Mobility – Keep Things Moving

In Exercise:

Mobility is about the functional range of motion. It’s your body’s ability to move freely, comfortably, and without pain. It’s what allows you to get off the floor, reach the top shelf, or dance with joy.

In Life:

Mobility is an emotional and energetic flow. It’s what helps you move through grief, release stuck emotions, and evolve your perspectives. Stuck energy shows up as stress, fatigue, and burnout. Movement—physical or metaphorical—is medicine.

Real-Life Practice:

Start the day with a walk, a stretch, or a dance break.

Write out your thoughts to process them instead of suppressing them.

Unblock a stagnant area of life: declutter a space, end an unhealthy habit, or finish that project you've been putting off.

💡 Mantra: "I flow. I don’t freeze."

4. Strength – Own Your Power

In Exercise:

Strength is your muscles’ ability to resist force and move weight. It’s how you build resilience and capability—both physically and mentally.

In Life:

Strength is showing up when it’s hard. It’s setting boundaries. Saying no. Or saying yes when you’ve been hiding. Inner strength is less about force and more about fortitude. It’s choosing what’s right for you, even if it’s not popular or easy.

Real-Life Practice:

Speak your truth, even if it’s scary.

Follow through on commitments to yourself.

Stand up for someone—or yourself—when needed.

💡 Mantra: "I am strong enough to hold what matters and let go of what doesn’t."

5. Stability – Root Down to Rise Up

In Exercise:

Stability is your body’s ability to balance and stay grounded, especially during movement. It comes from strong foundations—core strength, alignment, breath.

In Life:

Stability is what keeps you centered in chaos. It’s the habits, rituals, and values that help you return to yourself when life feels overwhelming. It’s your anchor—so you don’t drift.

Real-Life Practice:

Start your day with a grounding ritual: meditation, movement, or morning pages.

Build boundaries that protect your peace.

Find your core values and live by them.

💡 Mantra: "I am rooted, not rigid."

6. Stillness – Be Where You Are

In Exercise:

Stillness is the pause between movements. The exhale after exertion. The awareness of breath, posture, and presence. It’s where recovery happens and clarity begins.

In Life:

Stillness is not doing nothing—it’s doing presence. It’s a conscious pause. A sacred stop. It’s what allows integration, reflection, and deep listening. Stillness invites you to check in with yourself instead of checking out.

In a culture obsessed with productivity, stillness is radical. And necessary.

Real-Life Practice:

Sit for five minutes a day with no phone, no music, just breathe.

Don’t rush into solving a problem. Sit with it.

Use stillness to respond, not react.

💡 Mantra: "I find power in the pause."
